Hari says to prepare the portrait, he used both sketches he did of Paul Robeson when he originally met with him in 1973 and a bust sculpted by his longtime friend Antonio Salemme, the Italian-born
American sculptor and painter best known for his sculpted portraits of John F. Kennedy and Albert
Einstein. "They were using the real bust of Robeson in the London production, and Antonio let me
use it to finish the portrait," says Hari.
Hari also used interviews with subjects and their family and friends when preparing to layout a
portrait. "It's part of my process, it helps me get to know the person and with Robeson, I had done a
lot of rescarch and knew what I wanted to do." said Hari.
Still trying to absorb the news that the Robeson was really the voice of the man chasing Hans Solo
and his buddies, Bell paused and took a deep breath, "I can honestly say it's an education working
here and you learn something new every day," she said.
